By sharing data in the cloud, Chevron models key processes and boosts asset performance in a declining gas field

Angela Taylor of global energy company Chevron explains the value of data-sharing in the successful operational upgrade of Marathon’s Alba Gas Plant in the USA. Using the PI System, an edge-to-cloud data management system, the Chevron team gathered data to simulate key asset processes using live data delivered in under two minutes, thereby increasing operational efficiency and profitability and ensuring safe and secure operations of the plant.

Goals

  • Integrate asset data to enable real-time process simulation
  • Provide timely and accurate updates to monitor plant performance
  • Improve alert and simulation capabilities
  • Enable the team to collaborate better using the cloud

Challenges

  • Disparate project data, documents, and models
  • Expert team dispersed across various locations

Solutions

  • PI System
  • PI Cloud Connect

Results

  • Improved data sharing and security
  • Flexibility and scale with up to 10,000 events and 100,000 PI tags incorporated into the system, providing an accurate perspective of the entire operation
  • Seamless cloud connection between two PI servers enabled real-time data updates, with information received in under three seconds in the mainframe and under 20 seconds on-site, enabling the team to model key asset processes and define actions in under two minutes
  • Collaboration boosted safety and security, improved overall asset profitability and, by driving efficiency, increased operational sustainability performance
